Today penguins are almost universally protected by National governments. All penguins south of 60 degrees South are also legally protected under the Antarctic Treaty. Regardless of such protection penguins are still vulnerable to climate change, habitat destruction, overfishing of their food sources, pollution, oil speills, and human encroachment on nesting areas.
